Switching to a natural skincare routine from the usual cosmetic or beauty product skin care routine can have a bunch of amazing benefits for you and your skin. But surprisingly, it can also have great benefits for the environment and the ecosystem!

In our first article, Natural Skin Care Defined, we discussed what natural skincare is, the best ways to get started and some of the benefits you can expect. In the next article, Natural Skin Care At Home, we shared our favorite two components to get started with your natural skincare routine at home: carrier oils and essential oils. With these two different types of oils, you can make thousands of different combinations of blends and recipes for all of your hair, scalp, face and skin needs.
What is Natural Skincare?

As we mentioned in Natural Skin Care At Home, to us, natural skin care means using products on your skin that are made from organic, therapeutic ingredients. As we say here at Utama Spice, If you wouldn’t cook with it, you shouldn’t put it on your body.
The reason it is so important to approach skin care with this perspective is because our body takes in and releases whatever is put on our skin, good or bad. By sweating, the skin, our body’s largest organ, can remove tons of unwanted toxins every day. But unfortunately, many of the common cosmetics products actually clog our pores, making the toxin excretion process less effective. So not only is it possible to absorb the chemicals from these products through the skin, but they can also hamper the body’s natural process to get rid of them. This can lead to an unwanted cycle where the perceived solution to the problem actually becomes the problem.

(For more information about the different kinds of synthetic chemicals to watch out for in your skincare products, check out our articles Quitting Chemicals and Toxins in Your Makeup.)
Quitting Chemical Beauty Products
With all of that taken into consideration, that’s one of the main reasons we advocate switching to a natural skin care routine. Another big reason, like we mentioned above, is the environment. Most skincare products come in plastic packaging and with plastic wrapping that isn’t great for the environment. But what’s much worse is the process to actually create these cosmetics products. Since many of them are made from synthetic chemicals or petroleum bases, the byproduct of the production of these beauty products is usually filled with these chemicals and more often than not, winds up back in the water or air. From there, the toxins can leech down into the ecosystem, harming sea life and spreading chemicals into the water supply.
But we’re here to tell you that it’s not all bad! Switching to a natural skin care routine can improve the health of your skin, save you money, support a sustainable environment, and provide plenty of benefits!

If you’ve read our previous article Natural Skin Care Defined, you may have seen this list before, but this is just a sample of all of the benefits you can get for your skin care from just one oil!

As we said in Natural Skin Care At Home, argan oil is a carrier oil. Carrier oils are usually vegetable oils like argan oil, castor oil or coconut oil and are typically used in aromatherapy and skin care to dilute essential oils. This is because some essential oils aren’t as gentle as others when applied to the skin, but can still have great benefits when used in lessened amounts. That is exactly when carrier oils are handy.

If you’d like more information about our 4 favorite carrier oils to start your natural skin care routine with, check out our previous post on Natural Skin Care At Home. Otherwise, in this article, we’ll be discussing how to choose the best natural skin care brand, which types of products we recommend, and how to get started with a natural acne treatment routine.
How to Choose the Best Natural Skin Care Brand
High-Quality Natural Skin Care
When it comes to choosing which natural skin care brand you want to try, there are a few things you should consider. The first is the source and quality of the ingredients. As we discussed in our first article about Argan Oil, purchasing the right argan oil from the right source can have a multitude of effects.

When it comes to argan oil, there are basically two varieties. The first, is the true, high-quality argan oil. This is made by women from a tribe of rural farmers in Southwest Morocco called Berbers. They have been making argan oil for generations. Since the argan tree is a very thorny tree and the oil is not made from the fruit, but rather the seed, the Berbers actually let goats climb the trees and eat the fruit. They then collect the seeds, wash them and hand-press them into the argan oil. The seeds are said to be “16 times harder than a hazelnut,”1 so this is quite an impressive endeavor. But that is not the only amazing part about the production of authentic argan oil! In the process, this industry “supports 2.2 million people living a subsistence existence in rural regions. It is vital both economically and culturally.”1

Meanwhile, the alternative is the mass-produced argan oil. Rather than hand pressing the argan seeds, they are instead placed into solvents which extract the oil chemically. While this allows the companies to produce more quicker and easier, the purity and the quality suffers, which generally reduces the effectiveness and benefits of the oil. This alternative oil also cuts out the rural farmers who make their livelihood from this work.
So the source and quality of the ingredients can have a bunch of different effects, not only on how well the product works, but also on the socioeconomic landscape of those that make the products. The next thing to consider is the way it’s made. Is the product made in a sustainable or environmentally-friendly manner?
Natural, Sustainable Skin Care: Tri Hita Karana

Here at Utama Spice, a large part of our mission and vision includes adhering to the Balinese cultural concept of Tri Hita Karana, which commits us to respecting and working harmoniously with humanity, nature and the divine. As a business we understand the importance of the individual to maintain the health of the global village, so we strive to lower our impact on the environment. We do extensive research to support the local natural resource base and to enhance local farming skills in such areas as organic farming, bee farming and seaweed farming. These farming communities produce the raw materials for our products.
Affordable, Natural Skin Care
And the last main thing to consider is obviously price! If price is truly a large obstacle, it can be much easier to get your natural skin care routine started with a few oils. Like we mentioned in our Natural Skin Care At Home article, just between argan oil and lavender essential oil, you can treat a lot of different skin conditions and provide your skin with a wealth of benefits.

However, if you want to get all of the benefits that natural skin care has to offer in a variety of different ways and without spending too much time researching and making your own recipes and blends, then this next part is for you!
