There are plenty of other ways to use essential oils too. These different benefits and methods have been discovered over the course of history and are part of the broader practice known as aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy
The practice of aromatherapy dates back thousands of years to some of the ancient civilizations including the Mesopotamians, Indians, Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. It is a form of holistic, alternative medicine based on the healing, medicinal and therapeutic properties of plants, essential oils and most notably, their aroma. This practice recognized that there are multiple uses for different oils in their different forms. Depending on the essential oil and the desired outcome, sometimes the topical application can be ideal, and other times inhalation.
Baths and massages are some other fun mediums for aromatherapy!
Essential Oil Diffusers
With the invention and improvement of the modern essential oil diffusers in the last two decades, aromatherapy has been gaining traction and popularity. With the ease of using a diffuser and the many essential oils, benefits and wonderful scents available, more and more people have decided to give it a try.
Before diffusers were available, incense, candle burning, and massages or topical application were some of the more common ways of experiencing aromatherapy. The practice of distilling plants and flowers to create essential oils has been around for centuries, possibly even millennia, so it’s great to see that mankind keeps finding new, improved ways to incorporate the natural, therapeutic powers of Mother Nature.
There are a few different kinds of diffusers out there you might run into and depending on your budget and priorities, we’ll help you decide which one is right for you!
Heat Diffuser
There are a few different kinds of heat diffusers for essential oils: electric heat diffusers, candle warmer heat diffusers, and lamp ring diffusers. All of these use heat to evaporate the oil into the air. The electric heat diffuser is the most common, while the candle warmer heat diffuser is a simple at-home trick you can use. The lamp ring diffusers place the essential oil near a light bulb to heat and disperse it. While the heat diffuser is a quick and usually simple way to enjoy some of the wonderful aromas of essential oils, the heat, unfortunately, can mitigate some of the more therapeutic effects of essential oils due to changes on the chemical level.
Evaporative Diffuser
Evaporative essential oil diffusers don’t use heat. Instead, these diffusers hold the essential oils in something highly absorbent like a wick or a pad to allow the essential oil to diffuse simply by evaporating into the air. Many evaporative diffusers use a fan to increase circulation and evaporation in a controlled way, allowing you to adjust the intensity and duration.
A simple example of an evaporative diffuser is the chakra bead bracelets. Many of these come with lava rocks that can absorb essential oils and then slowly evaporate those oils back into the air.
Ultrasonic Diffusers
Ultrasonic diffusers have become quite popular recently. They require putting water in a small reservoir along with the essential oil or oils of choice. A small disc under the reservoir then vibrates very quickly, which causes the essential oils to break into tiny particles and disperse with the water in a thin mist. This type of diffuser doesn’t use heat, so the mist is cool and refreshing, carrying the aroma of your favorite essential oil throughout the room.
Nebulizing Diffusers
Similarly to an ultrasonic diffuser, nebulizing diffusers don’t use heat. However, they also don’t use water. Nebulizing diffusers use pure essential oils, and do so more effectively than the previous water-less options, thanks to modern technology!
Nebulizing diffusers use cool, pressurized air to force the essential oils into an atomizer, which breaks the oil molecules into very fine particles that are then dispersed into the air as a mist. Because this method is undiluted and doesn’t require heat, many believe this to be the best essential oil diffuser for aromatherapy, as it delivers the oil in its purest, finest form, which allows for better absorption in the air, lungs, skin and even surfaces for disinfecting.
