If you find essential oils that claim to be a therapeutic grade, then it is a potentially false and misleading claim because no government agency or organization grades or certifies any essential oils as therapeutic, medicinal, or aromatherapy grade.
Why These Terms are Used
More often than not, certain manufacturers will use these terms as a way to sell their essential oil products for more money. However, a more consumer-friendly way to sell essential oils that makes more sense would be to talk about their therapeutic quality, rather than grade.
When the word quality instead of grade is used, it isn’t as misleading and instead suggests that the essential oils can be used for therapeutic applications, aroma-therapeutic use, and professional aromatherapy applications.
Essential Oils and the Dangers of Marketing
Essential oils have become quite popular in recent times, and this popularity continues to grow. With this popularity, we see more and more companies popping up and selling essential oils, and often these companies end up spreading misinformation. Some may claim that their essential oils have medicinal benefits based on personal experience and they can then sell them for more money because of the unsubstantiated claim they are making.
Some essential oil companies, for example, have claimed that their oils can cure certain diseases and cancer and of course they were not able to back up these claims. However, many people fell for their misleading and outrageous claims.
The Lack of Regulations
Due to the lack of regulations and standards for essential oils, distributors don’t have to prove the safety of the oil before they can sell them. They also don’t have to prove their effectiveness or disclose any side effects that one may experience while using the essential oils. It can become dangerous when you rely on the claims and information from a distributor without doing the research yourself.
You should always be aware of where the essential oils are coming from, how they are made, and if they are of high-quality or not.
Buying Essential Oils
You should watch for terms like fragrance oil and nature identical oil or perfume oil because these terms may be hinting at the possibility that the essential oils they are offering are not pure and single essential oils. Instead, they could be a combination of essential oils and even chemicals which shows that the retailer you are looking at may not really understand aromatherapy and essential oil use.
You should also do your research and find out where the plants are coming from and how they are grown and processed into the essential oils you are purchasing.
To minimize any risk and to use essential oils in the way they were intended, it is imperative that you only purchase your essential oils from a reputable company that does not hide any ingredients or use any dangerous processing techniques that could ultimately lead to contamination.
