Eczema is a medical condition that manifests with white patches of skin that appear rough and inflamed. Some may also have blisters that cause itching and bleeding, but most of the time, there is no obvious external cause for these blisters and patches.

The Causes of Eczema

Pollen is one of the most common causes of eczema cases. However, the exact cause of this skin condition is still unknown. It could be a combination of a number of environmental and genetic factors, and it is more likely to occur with children than adults.

The most common type of eczema is called atopic dermatitis, and this skin condition can often mimic an allergy but is not an allergic reaction to anything. Research is still being conducted to find more definitive causes for this skin condition, but with current information, scientists have narrowed down a few other possible causes of eczema.

Genetics

Eczema is not contagious which means you can’t catch it if you come in contact with someone that has this skin condition. It also runs in families which shows us that there is a genetic role that plays a large part in the development of eczema.

Environment

It has also been found that a person’s environment may also play a role in the development of eczema. For example, if you live in colder climates, you may find that eczema will be a bit more common than in warmer areas.

Eczema Triggers

A trigger is not something that is said to cause eczema; however, it is what we refer to as the possible causes of flare-ups. Some of the most common eczema triggers are substances and materials that can irritate the skin. For example, certain materials like wool or other man-made fibers may cause flare-ups and can worsen the condition’s symptoms.

Other triggers include certain soaps, perfumes, makeup, chlorine, solvents, cigarette smoke, dust, and other irritants you may be exposed to in your environment. You may also find your symptoms worsen when you are hit with a cold or other type of bacterial infection.

While there are several possible causes of eczema as well as a host of triggers that can cause your symptoms to worsen, you should still do what you can to help lessen the severity of your symptoms and maintain a good skincare routine to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.
