The skin is the body’s biggest organ, and it needs to be cared for as such. We need to be mindful about what we are putting on our skin because our skin eagerly absorbs what is put on it. What goes onto the skin also goes into your skin, and this is important to remember as you choose cosmetics and skin care and beauty products.
Cleansing the Skin and Exfoliating
When we exfoliate the skin, we are smoothing and improving the skin tone while also enhancing the skin’s receptiveness when it comes to oil-controlling ingredients. Exfoliation is also important to our skincare regime because it helps us get rid of oily and dull skin cells to promote clear and healthy skin.
Exfoliation removes the dead skin cells from the surface of the skin; however, it is not something you want to do daily because the skin also sheds dead skin cells on its own and you don’t want to disrupt this process.
In between the days you exfoliate, you should still be cleansing the skin. When you cleanse the skin, you are removing any buildup and debris that has settled. Additionally, your skin is always covered in bacteria, pollutants, dirt, and other contaminants, so it is important to cleanse the skin to get rid of these impurities and maintain a clean and fresh appearance to your skin.
Following a Good Skincare Routine
When you follow a good skin care routine, and you actively moisturize the skin, you are also helping to maintain its elasticity. Heavier moisturizers should be used at night while lighter ones apply during the day.
A good routine includes daily cleansing and toning, moisturizers and other treatments to target your specific skin care problems and exfoliation should also be included in the routine at least twice per week.
Always Read the Label
When choosing what products to use, you should always read the labels just as you would a food label. It is important to understand what ingredients are used in your skincare and cosmetic products because what goes on the skin also goes in the skin and this is an important point to remember.
Much of what we apply to our skin is actually absorbed into the bloodstream, so it’s best to avoid topical applications that include harmful ingredients. Formaldehyde is one ingredient that should be avoided. This can be found in many preservatives often found in beauty products such as soaps and body washes.
Phthalates should also be avoided and are not listed on the label. These are found in fragrance and other ingredients in a product. To avoid this, look for products that say they are phthalate free.
Also, when looking for products to use that are safe for the skin, don’t fall into the hype of overbranded products that make big claims or products that you are unsure of. Do you research before you purchase anything and read all the labels carefully?
