We’ve discussed on our previous post, the strange social embarrassment that gas can bring. Bloating often accompanies gas, and is a very common occurrence, with around 1 in 10 people suffering chronically from it.  With the problem being so universal let’s explore and understand why this strange phenomenon happens.Our diets are the primary cause of stomach discomforts, and especially bloating or gas. Examining this strange phenomenon that can makes you looks a couple months pregnant, was strangely fun, it’s strange how gas can remain intrinsically funny after all these years. A desire on telling social embarrassing gas stories runs deep in my veins, but I’ll muster all my will powerm and  try to focus on the seriousness of farts instead.

Large meals seem to promote the phenomenon. Eating smaller portions more often is advised to prevent this. Though fats aren’t actually bad for you bar trans-fats, they can increase bloating; the same goes for most rich calorically dense foods. We all have that one friend that hovers their food down in a matter of seconds, while you’re still halfway through you first bite. Later on they complain that they seem to be pregnant with a food child, coincidence? Apparently not, as eating fast is cause for increased bloating. If you enjoy the experience of being pregnant, then sure, do these things… but otherwise avoid them. Actually just avoid them, because I can’t be held responsible for you bringing a child made of mashed potatoes into the world.

What exactly is the gas in your stomach, and how does it get there? Well at least half of it is just swallowed air. The other half is produced by bacteria in your gut that helps digest your food. Because half of it is caused by air swallowed there are certain things to avoid. Gum, fizzy drinks, drinking through a straw, and even sucking on candy can increase the chances of swallowing air. Who knew air could be so annoying? Me obviously, if it wasn’t for air Hitler would have never of existed. Think about that.

We’ve all heard of the rumours surrounding beans and the ill effects they cause your stomach to go through. Well they aren’t the only foods to avoid, even though vegetables like to act naive and innocent by being healthy, certain kinds can also cause gas. Brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, prunes, and even the beloved carrots can increase your chances of creating gas. Even other healthy choices like wholegrain carbohydrates can cause gassiness. This is due to the fact that fibres are actually just indigestible carbohydrates. The situation can be minimised with higher water consumption, as the fibre will absorb the extra water. Allowing your stomach bacteria to get used to your diet is also helpful. Artificial sweeteners should also be avoided, not just for the nasty farts they cause, but also because they aren’t in fact better for you than sugar, and yet they taste worst. It’s a lose, lose situation really.

Even though we can easily minimise a lot of bloating and gas, some degree of it is inevitable. In our next part treatment of the problem with various remedies natural remedies will be examined. Though it is worth noting that if you suffer chronic bloating, and gas it could be a symptom of something else wrong, such as scarring of the stomach, or impaired muscle function of your digestive track. Make sure to consult a doctor if they problem is chronic. Anyway don’t worry too much, you probably won’t die, but you could. But probably not, but it could definitely happen. Maybe.
