What is Palmarosa Essential Oil Made Of?
Palmarosa essential oil is derived from the palmarosa plant — also known as Indian or Turkish geranium. The palmarosa is a tropical grass native to the wetlands of India and Nepal. It is named “palmarosa” because its fragrance is very similar to that of rose oil. Plus, many years ago, Turks also used to blend palmarosa oil with the more expensive rose oil.
While palmarosa smells like rose, it actually shares many similarities with citronella and lemongrass. The grass is sturdy and can thrive even in dry saline soils or during drought.
Now, as for the essential oil, it is obtained from two types of palmarosa: Sofia and Motia. The two vary slightly in their aroma, from rose-like to spicy or citrusy.
How is Palmarosa Essential Oil Extracted?
Palmarosa essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the palmarosa plant. The grass is harvested before flowering and then dried. It is vital to get the timing of the harvest right as it may affect the quality of the essential oil.
Once dried, the plants undergo steam distillation. Here, the nutrients and chemical compounds of the plants are removed via evaporation. Next, these nutrients and compounds are gathered to cool down and form droplets.
The oil produced is yellow in color and, as mentioned above, has a fragrance very similar to rose oil.
Benefits of Palmarosa Essential Oil
1. Helps to reduce fever
Palmarosa essential oil can help to reduce fever thanks to its antiviral, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties.
Place a few drops of the essential oil to your bath water to help you cool down. Alternatively, dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil and massage it onto your chest, back, and neck.
2. Prevents sepsis and aids in wound healing
The antibacterial and antiseptic properties of palmarosa essential oil can help to prevent the spreading of infection and sepsis.
Sepsis can occur in any vulnerable organs such as the colon, kidneys, urinary bladder, and urethra. Not only does it cause acute unbearable pain but also cramps and convulsions.
So, ensure that all wounds are taken care of to avoid this torturous pain by applying palmarosa essential oil on the wounds. When you are applying the essential oil, make sure to also apply it on the surrounding skin just to be on the safe side.
3. Inhibits bacterial growth
Bactericidal in nature, palmarosa essential oil kills bacteria and prevents any further bacterial growth.
A study published in the Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences found that palmarosa essential oil showed the highest activity against both gram-positive bacteria (such as Escherichia coli) and gram-negative bacteria (such as Staphylococcus aureus).
- aureus causes various infections like urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and meningitis. E. coli., on the other hand, is one of the main causes of food poisoning.
4. Improves digestion
Besides that, another extremely useful benefit of palmarosa essential oil is that it aids in promoting healthy digestion. It stimulates the secretion of digestive juices in the stomach to promote digestion. On top of that, it also helps the absorption of nutrients from food for a more efficient digestive process.
5. Stimulates cell growth
Palmarosa essential oil does wonders for the skin. First, palmarosa is cytophylatic, which basically means that it is able to stimulate cell growth. This makes it great as an anti-aging treatment. It helps to diminish the signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, and pigmentation. Besides that, the fact that palmarosa is cytophylatic also makes the essential oil excellent at treating wounds and scars.
6. Treats acne
Apart from the above, palmarosa essential oil’s strong antibacterial and antimicrobial qualities can help to treat acne, too. These qualities help to remove excess oil and skin cells in clogged up pores — one of the main causes of breakouts. Besides that, it also balances sebum production in the skin to help regulate oil levels.
Dilute palmarosa essential oil with a carrier oil and dab the mixture onto the affected area to manage those pesky pimples.
7. Moisturizes and hydrates the skin
For smoother and softer skin, give palmarosa essential oil a try. The oil is well known for its hydrating properties. It helps the skin to retain moisture in the tissues.
For supple and hydrated skin, add a drop of palmarosa essential oil to your cleanser, serum, or moisturizer. Alternatively, dilute the essential with a carrier oil and gently massage the combination onto the skin.
8. Promotes healthy hair and scalp
Palmarosa oil is also a great addition to your hair care. It is extremely rich in linalool and limonene — compounds that encourage and promote healthy and strong hair. The essential oil is excellent at eliminating excess oil, dead skin cells, and grease while strengthening the follicles and increasing the elasticity of the hair to prevent damage.
To experience the wonders of palmarosa essential oil, mix two to three drops of the essential oil with your regular shampoo. You can also, of course, do the same for your conditioner. Alternatively, warm up a few drops of the essential oil and massage it into your scalp. Dilute it first with a carrier oil, if necessary. It will provide your hair a boost in volume without leaving you with a frizzy, out-of-control mane.
9. Prevents hair loss
On top of that, the vitamin E and limonene in palmarosa essential oil are incredibly effective in inhibiting hair loss, too. In fact, the oil even encourages hair growth.
For a full head of hair, massage a few drops of the essential oil into your hair and scalp. Dilute the oil beforehand if there is a need for it. Then, massage deeply to make sure that the oil penetrates all the way through.
10. Leaves the home smelling heavenly
If you need to quickly deodorize your home and leave it with the most wonderful aroma, it is time to whip out your palmarosa essential oil.
Simply add five to six drops of the oil to your diffuser and let the oil’s soothing scent takes care of it all.
