HOW TO USE
Essential oils have the natural ability to heal, soothe, and stimulate. With antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, essential oils have a wide variety of uses.
Sniff essential oils right from the bottle for an instant pick-me-up, to relive anxiety, or to induce relaxation. Add to carrier oil, such as jojoba, and use in a soothing massage. Place a few drops in diffuser to eliminate household odors. Add to cleaning products for more antibacterial and antimicrobial power. During cold and flu season, diffuse daily to stimulate immunity. Mix with carrier oil and apply to the skin to heal wounds. Add a drop or two to your face serum and apply daily to and protect skin against the signs of aging.
Before applying to skin, do a patch test.
How to patch test – Wash, clean, and dry the area on your upper arm near the crook of your elbow. Apply small amount of essential oil and cover with a bandage. Leave the bandage on for 24 hours, then remove and check for irritation. If skin looks clear and there is no reaction after the allotted test time, the oil is presumably safe to use. If you feel irritation at any time duringthe test, remove bandage and wash area with soap and water.
Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil
Refreshing, invigorating, and uplifting, pink grapefruit essential oil (Citrus x paradisi) is one of the most versatile essential oils in the market. Just like grapefruit itself, pink grapefruit essential oil is an enigma to many.
In this article, we will be peeling back the layers to learn more about pink grapefruit essential oil — everything from what it is made of and its extraction to its multi-faceted uses. Read on now!
What is Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil Made Of?
At the risk of stating the obvious, pink grapefruit essential oil is derived from grapefruits — a rounded fruit with a finely dotted peel. Grapefruit’s plant, meanwhile, is a small perennial with bright green leaves and fragrant four-petaled flowers.
Now, for a little bit of history of this intriguing fruit: it is also referred to as the “forbidden fruit” of Barbados and is a latecomer to the citrus family. Originally thought to have emerged from pomelo, it only came to be known as “grapefruit” in 1814 as an allusion to how the fruits appear to grow in grape-like clusters.
However, the true origin of grapefruit was only determined in 1948. It was revealed that grapefruit is actually a hybrid of the pomelo (Citrus maxima) and sweet orange (Citrus sinensis).
Today, the United States is the world’s largest supplier of grapefruit and is followed closely behind by China and South America.
How is Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil Extracted?
Pink grapefruit essential oil is extracted through the mechanical compression of the rind of the fruit — a method commonly referred to as cold-pressing.
Through this method, the oil is extracted from glands in the peel of the grapefruit. Once extracted, you will get orange-tinted oil that smells exactly like the grapefruit itself: fresh, sweet, and citrusy with just a hint of bitterness to it.
Benefits of Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil
1. Boosts immunity
Similar to the other citrus essential oils, pink grapefruit essential oil is filled to the brim with antioxidants — especially vitamin C. If you feel the flu or cold heading your way, a good dose of vitamin C from this essential oil can keep the illness at bay.
Besides that, the essential oil is rich in bioflavonoids that help to enhance the action of Vitamin C, too. Plus, bioflavonoids are also known for their immune-boosting properties and their ability to treat allergies and viruses.
2. Wonderful anti-inflammatory properties
It does not matter if its inflammation stemming from infected wounds or other more dire inflammatory conditions (such as arthritis and Crohn’s disease), pink grapefruit essential oil has you covered.
The essential oil’s organic compounds can help to reduce and prevent inflammation. One such compound that can help is limonene. Limonene in pink grapefruit essential oil (and other citrus essential oils) helps to inhibit inflammation and to regulate the body’s cytokines (to put it simply, these are the body’s chemical messengers) production.
When utilized correctly and frequently, pink grapefruit essential oil can help with alleviating the symptoms of various inflammations, including rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune diseases, infections, and bowel diseases.
3. A natural antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, and antiviral agent
From bacteria to fungi, from mold to parasites; pink grapefruit essential oil is all you need to address these issues.
The oil’s potent and broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities helps to kill and eliminate various strains of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that are harmful to the body. This includes E.coli, S.aureus, and Salmonella typhimurium.
4. Uplifts mood and boosts energy
If you are feeling the blues, let pink grapefruit essential oil wash away the negative feelings. The essential oil is a wonderful remedy for depression, anxiety, stress, fatigue, and sluggishness.
Inhale the essential oil to stimulate the nervous system if you need a little pick-me-up. You will notice increased alertness and improved focus.
A study published in the Journal of Japanese Pharmacology found that inhaling grapefruit oil (along with a few other essential oils) significantly affects brain activity and relaxation.
So, to relieve stress, inhale pink grapefruit essential oil right from the bottle. Alternatively, place a few drops of the oil in a diffuser and let it diffuse the tension away. You can also add two to three drops of the essential oil with a little bit of coconut oil to a cotton ball. Then, rub the mixture onto your wrists, neck, behind your ears, and chest.
5. Treats oily skin and acne
In addition to the above, pink grapefruit essential oil can also keep your skin healthy by inhibiting and treating skin conditions such as acne. Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin problem triggered by a few factors such as excess oil production and increased bacteria levels. Here, the essential oil regulates the activity of the sebaceous glands and, thus, reduces oil production.
Besides that, pink grapefruit essential oil also helps to cleanse the skin and rid it of dirt, grime, and dead skin cells. Its antibacterial properties help to keep the skin bacteria-free for a faster acne-healing process, too. This is why you will often see many store-bought cleansers, soaps, and lotions boast citrus oil as one of their ingredients.
To incorporate pink grapefruit essential oil into your skincare routine, add approximately three drops of the oil to your facial wash. Alternatively, make a natural acne spot treatment by combining one or two drops of the essential oil with half a teaspoon of coconut oil. Apply the blend to the affected area to help diminish acne and prevent infection as well as scarring.
6. As a multi-purpose hair care supplement
Greasy hair? Dandruff? Hair loss? Well, you can breathe a sigh of relief now as pink grapefruit essential oil can address all of these problems.
The essential oil’s antibacterial and antifungal properties come into play as it helps to manage dandruff by inhibiting the growth and presence of bacteria and fungus in the scalp.
On top of that, pink grapefruit essential oil is also helpful in managing and treating hair loss by stimulating hair growth and alleviating inflammation in the follicles.
For healthy scalp and tresses, add two to three drops of the essential oil to your shampoo or conditioner and massage it in. Alternatively, make a leave-in conditioner by mixing one to two drops of the essential oil with some coconut oil and apply the mixture onto your clean, damp hair. Bonus: its fresh and inviting scent is sure to brighten up your day!
Mixing Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil with Other Essential Oils
Pink grapefruit essential oil’s reviving and fresh scent ensures that it blends well with a diverse selection of essential oils. For an aromatic experience, blend the grapefruit oil with any of these essential oils: basil, palmarosa, chamomile, frankincense, geranium, jasmine, ylang-ylang, lime, bergamot, neroli, and lavender.
For some summer goodness, try blending grapefruit essential oil with lemon, bergamot, and spearmint essential oils.
Other Good-to-Know Information
Pink grapefruit essential oil is highly concentrated as a result of its extraction process. Therefore, it is best to dilute it with carrier oils such as coconut oil and jojoba oil. Always start with a skin patch test first to ensure you are not allergic to the oil.
Apart from that, grapefruit essential oil is also phototoxic. Hence, it is advised to avoid direct sun exposure after using the oil topically.
